Style sheet XSL terdiri dari satu atau lebih set aturan yang disebut template.
Sebuah template berisi aturan untuk diterapkan ketika node tertentu cocok.
Elemen <xsl:template>
Elemen <xsl:template> digunakan untuk membuat template.
Atribut match digunakan untuk mengasosiasikan template dengan elemen XML. Atribut match juga dapat digunakan untuk menentukan template untuk seluruh dokumen XML. Nilai atribut match adalah ekspresi XPath (yaitu match = “/” mendefinisikan seluruh dokumen).

Karena style sheet XSL adalah dokumen XML, dokumennya selalu dimulai dengan deklarasi XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>.
Elemen berikutnya,<xsl:stylesheet> , mendefinisikan bahwa dokumen ini adalah dokumen style sheet XSLT (bersama dengan nomor versi dan atribut ruang nama XSLT).
Elemen <xsl:template> mendefinisikan template. Atribut match = “/” mengaitkan template dengan root dari dokumen sumber XML.
Konten di dalam elemen <xsl:template> mendefinisikan beberapa HTML untuk ditulis ke keluaran.
Dua baris terakhir menentukan akhir template dan akhir style sheet.
Hasil dari contoh ini sedikit mengecewakan, karena tidak ada data yang disalin dari dokumen XML ke keluaran. Pada materi selanjutnya kita akan mempelajari menggunakan nilai dari elemen XML.
